IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: This catalog's Cohiba — including the Cohiba Red Dot — is the Dominican-made line owned by General Cigar Company in the United States. It is a separate brand from the Cuban Cohiba produced by Habanos S.A. The Cuban Cohiba cannot be legally imported or sold in the United States under the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba.

General Cigar Company first registered the Cohiba name in the United States in 1978 and began selling cigars under the Cohiba brand in the U.S. in the early 1980s. General Cigar Company has held U.S. trademark rights to the Cohiba name since 1981. After a long-running trademark dispute between General Cigar and the Cuban government, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in February 2005 in favor of General Cigar, confirming the company's exclusive ownership of the Cohiba trademark in the United States.

The Dominican Cohiba — sometimes called "Cohiba Red Dot" because of the red dot in the letter "o" on the band — is handmade at General Cigar's production facility in the Dominican Republic. The blend uses a Cameroon wrapper grown in West Africa, an Indonesian Jember binder, and Piloto Cubano filler grown in the Dominican Republic from Cuban-derived seed. The brand has expanded to include premium lines such as Cohiba Black, Cohiba XV, Cohiba Royale, and Cohiba Macassar. General Cigar Company is owned by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
