Oliva Cigar Co..
Oliva built its modern reputation on Nicaraguan puros — cigars made entirely from Nicaraguan tobacco — and on patient aging. The Serie V line in particular is built around long-aged ligero leaves from premium Nicaraguan growing regions, producing rich, complex profiles that won the Serie V Melanio top honors from Cigar Aficionado. The house style emphasizes depth, balance, and the expressive character of single-origin Nicaraguan tobacco, with the Connecticut Reserve line offering a milder Connecticut-wrapped alternative for the same construction quality at lower price points.
House Story
The Oliva tobacco family traces its roots to 1886, when Melanio Oliva began producing tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba. Melanio's work was interrupted by the Cuban War of Independence, and the operation was continued by his son Hipolito Oliva, who took over during the 1920s. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Melanio's grandson Gilberto Oliva emigrated with his family — first to Spain, then to Nicaragua, where the family found the soil and climate ideal for tobacco cultivation.
In 1995, Gilberto and his son Gilberto Jr. launched the Gilberto Oliva brand, which became Oliva Cigar Co. The company initially used the Plasencia factory before expanding its own operations. Oliva opened a new facility in Estelí in July 2003, replacing a smaller factory, and by 2005 was producing six million cigars per year.
The Oliva Serie V was released in 2007 and quickly established the brand as a top-tier Nicaraguan producer. The Serie V Melanio (named after the family patriarch) was named #1 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado in 2014. The company is now headquartered in Miami Lakes, Florida and remains one of Nicaragua's largest tobacco producers. In 2016, Oliva was acquired by J. Cortès, a Belgian cigar company, but continues to operate under the Oliva name with original family leadership involved.
